From time to time I like to report activities that go on behind the scenes to help give confidence to the larger community.
It was asked of me today whether I would look into the possibility of duplicate accounts. I did so and found 9 possibilities for account sharing. (equaling a total of 31 accounts) Of those possible duplicates, none had an account weight over 3.
Nevertheless, four of those were obvious duplicates and will be removed.
I hope this illustrates the truth that by in large the community is very honest and even in those few cases where this is not so, the weight system impedes any user from having a significant impact by creating multiple accounts. In other words, multiple accounts simply are not worth the effort and are not a concern to the larger community.

Good work Eric!
Has any action been taken against those with multiple accounts?
Can you give us the weight ranges of those with the multiple accounts?
I feel that if they belong to longer serving members with higher weights then they should have known better and action should be taken against them. It would act as a deterant to others. If newer members then fair enough it may be ignorance.

They were all less than 20 I believe. All of the secondary (or rather possible secondary) accounts were three or less.

Just out of curiosity....
Were you asked to look at specific possibilities
or across all the membership?
Either way, if you hadn't been asked would
these still exist today?
In other words, does catching these rely
(to some extent) on reports of suspicions by
other members?

No, I will occasionally look for this activity myself. There is not an automated method at this time (I intend to build this into v3, however). The reason I do not put it to such a high priority is that a new account has little impact on ratings as the weight is 1 or 2. The four accounts I removed were all 1 or 2 weight accounts.
