I'm not trying to start a debate, but rather, get some advice. Here's the situation:

I constantly find myself questioning why I give an image one image one vote and another a different vote. In some voting session I find myself rating an image to a "Technical eye" and sometimes with an "Artistic eye". While we aren't talking huge swings in rating because I try to, pardon the pun, look at the "big picture". The problem is that I take the ratings that I give seriously. If I give a rating then look at the results of the rating by the community, If I am an outlier I question why, is there something I missed. It's pretty maddening. I know that I tend to vote a bit lower than most because when I started I assumed that 5.5 was an average image in the universe of images posted here, but to change it now is problematic as it wouldn't be fair.

My questions are:
1. Am I nuts, do others wrestle with the same forces?
2. Do others also find that from session to session their votes also swing between artistic impression and technical ability?
3. Has anyone found a touchstone that leads to consistency in their votes?
4. Do others show a bias to categories that interest them or styles that resonate with their style?
5. Is there a fair way to get my votes up to the group average without causing harm to those I have already voted on? Or should I?

Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. I'm not looking for specific critera of what constitutes a technical superior image as much as gaining consistency in voting.

I have somtimes the feeling to that one day may votes are different then on other days too. Maybe it has something to do in what mood your are in. Sometimes I have the feeling that there are just better photos coming up in the voting pool then on other days.

I build my voting scale by reading a lot of Topic in the forum. An now I am trying to stick to it. Five for average and six for above average is ok to me.

Yes I too struggle with many of these issues.

I do know that some pools absolutely have better images sometimes.

Yes my mood does change as well as I have mentioned in one other thread.

I know that now I use more criteria as I have learned to see more of the tech. aspects in a photo but I think that I am just hardwired for aesthetics and so this has a big play.  There are things that are captured , that even though it may not be of tech. merit, emotionally or just plain hard to catch poses as in wildlife or everday life that I will take note of and give credit for.  In the old forum I had mentioned my angst about the average score of 5.5 and reactions about receiving said score.  Again without enough participation in the forum by the majority of the members, it seems as though 5.5 is less than pleasing. My average voting has increased since my start but I am also seeing many more lovely images both technically and aesthetically. In the end, all I can do is continue to look for specific criteria (as mentioned in another thread) and meld those together with what is eye pleasing to my personal taste.

It is difficult sometimes though so I hear ya.

I'll keep it simple...
Vote 'em as you see 'em!
